So, you would like to know more about me? Well, you came to the right place!
I LOVE HISTORY, but I LOVE TEACHING EVEN MORE!!
This is my 8th year of teaching at EMS. I teach Prime Time and three classes of U.S. History to 1865 (each semester). In 2012, I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Political Science from Bridgewater College. During my second year of teaching, I began taking graduate classes in history. In December 2015, I graduated from James Madison University with a Master of Arts in history. As if I did not have enough education, I received a grant from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to take summer courses in American history at Harvard University in July 2016 and at Yale University in June 2018.
In addition to teaching social studies, I enjoy going to antique car shows, particularly ones that feature Model "A" Fords. Occasionally, on the weekends and during the summer, you may find me giving tours at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum in Staunton, Virginia. Also, I currently serve as an adviser on the museum's education committee. My interest in America's 28th president led me to examine the controversy surrounding America's disagreement with the Treaty of Versailles. My spellbound fascination with this topic became the focus of my thesis: "The Monroe Doctrine as the Transparent Veil of Isolation During the League of Nations Debate".
For me, education is so important and I firmly believe in lifelong learning. As an educator, it is not just my goal for students to learn history, but to think critically and be able to understand events from an historical perspective. During the 2014-2015 school year, I became a digital pilot teacher for Rockingham County Public Schools. You can read more about the digital pilot program under the "Digital Learning" tab. Also, I was selected as Elkton Middle School's Teacher of the Year for the 2014-2015 academic year. In March 2016, I received the Outstanding History Educator award from the Daughters of the American Revolution, Massanutten Chapter. Most recently, I was named the 2017 Virginia History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Additionally, I serve as an area representative for the Virginia Council for Social Studies. Over the past few years, I've had the privilege to inspire other educators through leading workshops and presenting at professional conferences. Below is a list of the professional conferences where I have presented and/or attended.
