Classroom Innovation
During the 2016 - 2017 academic year, middle school students in Rockingham County received a touchscreen Chromebook. To learn more about that device, please use this link, which will take you to the RCPS technology webpage. Rockingham County's digital conversion project began in Spring 2014, and I have been a part of this process since it's beginning as a pilot teacher. During my two years as a pilot teacher, my students used both Chromebooks and MacBook Airs in my classroom. In July 2014, I spent three days, along with seven other middle school teachers, in Mooresville, North Carolina, where the entire school division has went digital. While there I gained a lot of insight into how digital learning occurs and how to implement it in a classroom. Since then, I have participated in numerous educational workshops and conferences that focused on teaching strategies with and without technology. You can see a complete list of all the sessions I have participated in under the "About Me" tab.
I am very excited for each student to finally receive his/her own device, and I hope that each student uses it to its full educational potential. It is my expectation that students will treat the Chromebook assigned to them with the utmost care and respect. Over the past two years, I saw increased student engagement with the technology as students learned the content material, but also honed in on their research skills. Below are a few examples of integration of technology.

Below are pictures of students working on an in-class flipped lesson whereby students went through a Google Presentation at their own pace and took notes on the information. The picture on the left is of a student watching a short video about the Paris Peace Conference. The picture on the right shows students working through the Google Presentation. You will notice that one student in that group is watching the video while the others are copying notes. The wonderful thing about teaching an in-class flipped lesson is having the students work at their own pace. I have found that doing this allows me to teach not just a whole class, but rather individual students within a whole class.

Field Trips with Technology
After I had used Padlet quite a while in a classroom, I began to wonder how else could Padlet be used. So, when the sixth grade went on a field trip to Colonial Williamsburg and the College of William and Mary, I had an idea! Why not use Padlet as a form of social media?? It was a success, oh and the students loved it too!
